My Opinion Piece: Social Media
This piece of writing is about what I think about social media, is mostly based on Facebook. This piece of writing is something we did for year 10 English. My opinion piece!
I think that most social media is bad, although some is good like Youtube. For this piece of writing, I will be looking at Facebook, which “google” tells me is the biggest social media. Research shows social media may not induce depression, but leads to inferiority and jealousy. There is no link between social media and people being less active, but people do bad and dumb things to get followers. For example, people taking Instagram pictures of themselves breaking things in supermarkets. People who excessively engage with Facebook feel worse after using it. Social media can get some kids cyberbullied, hacked personal accounts, and others getting their personal data. The meaning of social media according to google is: “A website and application that enables users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.”
The other reason that social media is bad (this time with Youtube) is the fact that personalised ads exist, which can make young kids want to buy new toys. It also works on adults as well, but not as much as children because they are less impressionable. Although adults might get sucked in by something like a new phone or a bike. Social media makes some people buy things that they don’t need or would normally buy other ways and not off the internet. This could make it so there are no more local businesses any more.
Social media is okay. I think for a lot of people on social media there is jealousy, sadness and people wanting new things. Social media can be bad. I think with all these facts you should take it into your own hands. Will you get stuck in the social media hole? Will you get annoyed that someone has more followers than you? Are you the person that will buy anything that you see on tv? If any of these questions are yes then social media is for not for you!
